God Remembers... We Forget

"And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no." Deuteronomy 8:2

How characteristic it was of the people of Israel, after they had been so miraculously delivered from the bondage and slavery of Egypt, to focus their hearts upon themselves and forget so quickly the mercy and grace of God, instead of delighting themselves in the goodness of God. How soon we forget and are consumed with our interests and concerns.

An unrest and discontent swept through the people of Israel that resulted in their desire to have a king "like the other nations." They wanted a king to lead them in their battles, to rule and reign over them, someone visible that they could proclaim as their exalted king.

But their desires were rooted in something that was much deeper. It was the ancient sin, the desire to be ruled by man rather than God, a prideful rejection of God's way and will, and a determination to be governed as they thought best. We want to do it our way. Man does not want to surrender the authority he possesses over his will to the sovereignty of God. How quickly they forgot they were God's chosen people. God had made a covenant with them, that if they would obey His commandments and follow His way, His hand of blessing and power would be upon them. He would be their God and they His people.

We FORGET WHAT GOD REMEMBERS. How quickly we forget His care, protection, leading, provision, compassion, love, grace, mercy, longsuffering, sufficiency, and all the multitude of benefits we have in Him. We forget what God remembers. We REMEMBER WHAT GOD FORGETS. We cannot stand in His holy presence without being aware of our abominable sins and wretchedness, our unworthiness, our rebellion and abounding sin.

But God said, "I will remove your sins as far as the east is from the west" (Psalm 103:12. "I will remember them no more" (Jeremiah 31:34). "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool" (Isaiah 1:18). The magnitude of God's infinite grace is beyond our comprehension. There are awesome dangers when we persist in doing it our way, regardless of the consequences that lurk in the shadows. When we choose to do what we want, rather than yielding to God's way and will, He does not take away our freedom to choose. However, neither does He take away the consequences of our choice. God will not impose His will or His way on us. After repeated complaining and rebellion by the people of Israel, we read, "He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul" (Psalm 106:15).

Are you a slave to your self-imposed bondage that inflicts a costly price now and in eternity, or a bond servant of Christ who knows how to direct your paths and order your way? Oh the joy, peace, and liberty of being set free. Free from the entanglement and bondage of being under the control of the enemy of our soul. Satan cleverly disguises his methods and objective of bringing us into such a state of frustration and confusion that our eyes are blinded to the truth, and we resist the prompting of the Holy Spirit to reveal Satan's insidious ways to us. God desires that we live in the liberty and freedom of His presence and power. Remember God's faithfulness.
