IF WE NEVER MEET AGAIN

Like being in a random group of strangers crossing at a pedestrian signal, it's not likely our paths will cross again.

But I still want you to know that life is intended to be much more than just working to stay ahead of bills, living for weekends, and marking time between birth and death. Life was meant to be a very satisfying experience, not just an existence. In fact, according to God's special book, the Bible, the original purpose of human life included friendship with God himself in a perfect world of love and trust! It was possible because "God created [humans] in his own image" (Genesis 1:27). He shared qualities with them like his own intelligence, conscience, personality, speech, the ability to choose. Things that give our lives meaning today and make interaction possible.

Despite a perfect start in a literal paradise, there came a time when the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, chose to go against one of God's basic instructions to them. The consequences began immediately! Their disobedience -- what the Bible calls "sin" -- broke their once-close relationship with God (Genesis 3). Sin's eventual result is physical death. And death's "door" opens into sin's final outcome, eternal separation from God forever!

In the thousands of years since then, human history can be generally summed up this way: "Although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened" (Romans 1:21). Sadly, we've all followed in the footsteps of our forefathers. Disobedience. Deceit. Lies. Using others. Loving money. No time for God in our lives. No wonder our lives offend God...we offend our friends and family even though they're sinners like us! The Bible says: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God....the wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23,6:23).

Restoring a broken relationship

As hopeless as that sounds, when mankind ruined things, God mercifully provided a solution. Have someone who had NEVER done wrong take the place or everyone who HAD done wrong -- that's ALL OF US! Two thousand years ago God put the plan into action. Jesus Christ, God's Son, became one of us. During his 33-year lifetime here, he never once sinned against God his Father in heaven or those around him on earth! In other words, only Jesus qualified as the perfect substitute for all the rest of us!

So Jesus' death on a cross was not the tragic end of the world's greatest teacher; it only appeared to be "just another cruel Roman execution." Actually, in dying Jesus carried through with his desire to take the eternal death penalty for us all! His death on the cross was actually the greatest substitution of all time and eternity!

The Bible explains Jesus' death this way, "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Christ died for our sins once for all, the righteous [Jesus] for the unrighteous [us], that he might bring us to God" (Romans 5:8, John 3:16-17,1 Peter 3:18).

Because Jesus is the one and only God-man, his suffering and death equaled the eternal judgment of hell that we all would otherwise experience. And his resurrection from the grave three days after his burial proved that he had conquered death, not only for himself, but for all who believe in him (1 Corinthians 15:1-8). That means that those who trust God to forgive their sins will also share in Jesus' resurrection life forever in Heaven.

There's more. Those who agree with God that Jesus' death is the only way their sins can be forgiven and trust God to save them from sin's judgment in hell will receive eternal, spiritual life beginning the moment they believe! Jesus said, "I have come that they [who trust in Me] may have life, and have it abundantly" (John 10:10). Jesus wants our lives to be filled with the meaning, direction, and satisfaction that comes only through a personal relationship with him. That life can start right now and never ends. Jesus is preparing an eternal place in heaven for all who believe in him, "In my Father's house are many rooms...I go to prepare a place for you...that you also may be where I am" (John 14:2-3)!

Making a life-changing choice

Since life's "crossing signals" brought us to this moment, while there's still time I hope you will accept God's offer to forgive your sins and give you a new life. "Whoever believes in him [Jesus] is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son" (John 3:18). "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31).

It's your decision! You can accept Jesus' offer in your own words or with a prayer like this to guide you: "Dear Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God who died for my sins and rose again. Thank you for loving me enough to die in my place so my sins can be forgiven! And thank you for the gift of eternal life and a home in heaven someday with you! Please help me become what You want me to be."
