The Word Was Made Flesh

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." John 1:1, 14

How can we possibly conceive of or understand the tremendous truth in these verses? We can only exclaim from our hearts, "How inconceivably great is the condescension of our mighty God!" To think that God should take upon Himself the form of a servant and become man, and should make Himself the surety and substitute for His own rebellious creatures, is beyond our uttermost thought. But He is God, and therefore He can do it. He is God; therefore I believe all that He has done.

What is the significance of John's declaration of THE WORD? Comparing it to the name given to the Scriptures-- "The Word of God"--we may discover the force and impact of its meaning and importance. The Scriptures reveal God's mind, express His will, and unveil His plan, purpose, and revelation for man. They make known His attributes and His perfections. They lay bare the heart of God, His condescending love, His matchless grace, His infinite mercy, and our blessed hope!

"And the WORD was God." He was not an "idea" of God or a "divine spark" placed within mankind. He was not an expression of God, but God Himself manifested to man. He not only revealed God, but was God Himself revealed. As the WORD, He did not come into being, or begin to be, but HE--Jesus Christ--was with God from all eternity, before time began. Therefore, He was "without beginning," which means He was eternal. Christ is the One who made the incomprehensible God, intelligible to mankind. He is the One who declared the Father to mankind and has purchased our redemption, "was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him." Though He Himself was eternal, yet He was born in time. Though He was eternally with God, in infinite love, He came down to tabernacle with man. Though He was the true and living God, He "made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of man, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."

I believe the complete Word of God, because He revealed it. Nothing less than His finished work on Calvary would be adequate to meet our need and reconcile us to God. He declared, "I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." What unbounded consolation He has provided for sinful man.

I have guilt that nothing but the blood of Christ can wash away. I have corruption that none but the Holy Spirit can subdue and mortify. I have wants that none but an All-Sufficient Savior can supply. Having Christ as my Savior, my friend, my surety, my righteousness, my companion, MY ALL...I have nothing to fear. I hope in Him, I believe in Him, I glory in Him. I make Him my salvation and all my desire. Trusting in Him, I will defy all my enemies. I will anticipate all He has prepared for me in Heaven. "For in Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things; to whom be glory forever, amen."

"And the WORD was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." HALLELUJAH!
